FAQ PAGE
How does tree climbing compare to ice?
Actually tree climbing is very similar to ice. You use the exact same gear you use for technical waterfall ice. Mono-points work but they can be a little hard to get out. Dual points rotate out a little easier. You will need rigid boots, steep ice crampons, and steep ice tools to climb safely. As in ice climbing falls are not part of the equation. If the route is too hard rest or lower down. It is not safe to consider falling as a means to improve your skill level.
How strenuous are the moves?
You will find the difficulty related to the type of tree you are climbing. Trees are rated on a one to four scale as follows with an X designations for a tree likely to collapse in the near future and a M designations for harsh surface conditions (loose bark):
1) Lower angle route on good surface
2) Vertical route on good surface
3) Overhanging sections on the route
4) Entire route is overhanging.
How do you lead the routes safely?
Routes are lead in the normal way. Protection can be placed with 6 to 8 inch lag eye bolt screws or webbing slung over branches. One or two eye bolts are placed at the top to facilitate rappelling or being lowered down.
Can you really simulate a lead?
Yes you can by drilling a 3/4 hole in the tree. You can then use your ice screws and actually screw them in to the wood. You will have to hang while doing this so the feel is similar to an actual lead. Try It!!! Click on this link to go to the picture page on screw leads.
